About Library Village Maniguh
Welcome to Library Village Maniguh, a pioneering initiative that transforms a rural landscape into a vibrant hub of knowledge, creativity, and community engagement. At its heart stands Pustak Tirth—a sanctuary where books are not just read, but lived, shared, and celebrated.
Set amidst natural beauty, Maniguh invites visitors, learners, and thinkers to slow down, reconnect with knowledge, and experience the joy of reading in harmony with nature.
Library Village Maniguh is envisioned as a model rural ecosystem where knowledge is accessible to all and learning is a shared community experience. The initiative seeks to redefine the role of villages—not just as places of residence, but as centers of intellectual and cultural growth.
Rooted in simplicity and sustainability, Maniguh promotes a lifestyle where books, ideas, and conversations become part of everyday life. The village encourages individuals of all ages to engage with literature, exchange ideas, and participate in collective learning.
Hamara Gaon ghar foundation
Hamara Gaon Ghar Foundation, has been created with the idea of developing rural areas in Uttarakhand, so that basic, essential facilities and amenities are available to one and all.
The vision for Hamara Gaon Ghar Foundation is to facilitate holistic, sustainable progress for villages dotting Uttarakhand’s vast countryside. Through the course of our groundwork research, we came to the conclusion that solely focussing on education or tourism would not bear successful results. Our plans endeavor to boost local tourism by developing these far-off rural areas into themed villages focusing on arts, culture and literature. Our ultimate goal is to develop a framework that improves access to education, boosts employment in the countryside whilst also reversing migration.

Library Village Initiative
Library Village Maniguh is a pioneering community library initiative in Maniguh village, situated in the Agastyamuni block of Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, India, recognized as the first library village in the state. Located at an altitude of 1,664 meters amid Himalayan peaks including Chaukhamba, Satopanth, and Thalay Sagar, it houses a collection of over 17,000 books covering diverse subjects such as religion, science, literature, history, and competitive exams, available in multiple languages including Hindi, English, Urdu, Sanskrit, Kashmiri, and Punjabi. Established by the Hamara Gaon Ghar Foundation, the facility offers free access to resources, high-tech amenities like computer training, internet, online education, digital content, and basic IT training for children, while also preserving rare books from the Naval kishore Press dating between 1800 and 1905.
The Library Village initiative was established in the early 2020s to improve access to books and learning resources in remote hill regions. The village library houses more than 20,000 books across literature, school curricula, science, history, competitive examinations, and children’s literature.
Access to the library is free of cost, and it remains open on all working days throughout the year. Books are available in Hindi, English, and regional languages. Several small reading spaces, called “Book Temples,” have also been created in nearby locations to encourage reading habits.
The network of reading spaces, known as Pustak Mandirs or Book Temples, has expanded from the central facility to eight locations, including sites in Pratapnagar, Khamoli, Bandi, and Khalyu, providing open-air reading opportunities across the region

Educational and Cultural Activities
Community programmes organised in Maniguh include:
* Book Marathon – village-wide reading campaign.
* Pine Needle Craft Workshops – skill development and livelihood training for women.
* Honey Bee Training Workshops – promoting beekeeping as supplementary income.
* Gaon-Ghar Mahotsav – annual cultural festival featuring scholars, poets, theatre artists, dancers, and musicians.
The Book Marathon represents a sustained, community-oriented reading initiative designed to cultivate a culture of collective engagement with books in Maniguh. Unlike conventional reading programs confined to institutional spaces, this campaign extends across the village, encouraging participation from individuals of all age groups. It fosters an environment where reading becomes a shared social practice rather than an isolated academic exercise. Through structured yet flexible engagement, the initiative enhances literacy, critical thinking, and imagination, while simultaneously reinforcing the idea of the village as a participatory knowledge ecosystem.
The Pine Needle Craft Workshops are grounded in the principles of ecological sustainability and community-based livelihood generation. Utilizing locally available pine needles—often regarded as forest residue—the workshops transform an environmental concern into a productive economic resource. A significant phase of this initiative was led by Manju R Shah, widely known as the “Pirul Woman of Uttarakhand,” whose expertise provided both technical guidance and inspirational leadership to the participants.
The workshops primarily engaged women from the village, equipping them with skills to produce eco-friendly handcrafted items. Notably, following these training sessions, women associated with the Library Village initiative began creating intricately designed rakhis from pine needles. These products have, over time, gained recognition and popularity across different parts of the country, emerging as a distinctive cultural and economic output of the village. This initiative represents a unique model of localized employment generation, where traditional ecological knowledge is innovatively adapted to create sustainable livelihood opportunities.
The Gaon-Ghar Mahotsav is an annual cultural event that serves as a significant platform for the convergence of intellectual discourse, artistic expression, and community participation. To date, three editions of the Mahotsav have been successfully organized as two-day events, each drawing the participation of a diverse group of individuals including professors, authors, poets, theatre artists, and singers.
The festival transforms the village into a vibrant cultural and intellectual space, fostering dialogue between academic thought and lived community experience. It provides a rare opportunity for rural audiences to engage directly with scholars and artists, while also offering a platform for local voices and expressions. Beyond its celebratory nature, the Mahotsav contributes to the strengthening of cultural identity, the promotion of interdisciplinary exchange, and the positioning of the village as a site of sustained cultural and intellectual engagement.
The Honey Bee Training Workshops introduce participants to the practice of beekeeping as a viable and sustainable supplementary livelihood. Situated within the ecological context of the region, these workshops integrate traditional knowledge with scientific techniques, enabling villagers to understand the ecological and economic significance of apiculture. The initiative not only supports income diversification but also contributes to biodiversity conservation through pollination. By fostering skills in beekeeping, the program strengthens the linkage between environmental stewardship and rural economic resilience.
These programmes combine literacy promotion with cultural preservation and sustainable livelihood initiatives.

Education Tourism and Homestays
Following recognition as a Library Village, local residents have been encouraged to develop homestay facilities to promote educational tourism. The village’s proximity to the trekking route leading to Kartik Swami Temple has been seen as an opportunity to combine reading culture, cultural tourism, and Himalayan eco-tourism.
At present, Kartik Swami is commonly accessed through the Kanakchauri route, from where pilgrims undertake a short trek to reach the temple. This traditional route may be considered the “Bhakti Marg”, as it primarily serves the devotional pilgrimage of visitors.
However, there exists another lesser-known but extremely beautiful and serene route passing through Library Village Maniguh. This route offers breathtaking views of the Himalayan landscape and passes through peaceful forested and rural areas that represent the authentic cultural life of the region.
Considering the unique identity of Maniguh as a Library Village, this alternative route could be thoughtfully developed as a “Gyan Marg” (Knowledge Path) leading to Kartik Swami. By establishing small reading spots or “Pustak Mandirs” at selected locations along this route, the entire pathway could symbolically represent a journey that integrates knowledge, nature, and spirituality.
Such a concept could create a distinctive knowledge tourism and cultural tourism circuit in the region. Visitors and pilgrims would not only experience the spiritual significance of Kartik Swami but also engage with reading spaces, local literature, and the intellectual traditions of the Himalaya.
The concept envisions Maniguh as a centre where visitors can participate in literary programmes, workshops, and cultural festivals while experiencing village life, thereby supporting local employment and reducing migration.

Technology and Facilities
The village library includes computers for digital literacy training and projectors for smart classes. Recreational activities are also organised to promote holistic learning among children.
Theme Village Concept
The development of Maniguh as a Library Village forms part of a broader concept of “theme villages” in Uttarakhand aimed at combining education, culture, and rural employment. The initiative seeks to reduce migration by creating opportunities in education, crafts, tourism, and community programmes.
